Janis Richards serves clients in the oil and gas industry who invest and work in former Soviet Republics.

Janis Richards, Consultant She is a native Russian speaker with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Soviet Studies (conferred with honors) from the University of Illinois. In 1992, Janis worked as a translator and editor on the Marathon Oil Feasibility Study for Sakhalin Island. Marathon Oil was a pioneer in oil and gas productivity research on Sakhalin Island due to their previous experience in offshore ice conditions off Alaska’s coast. While on this project, Janis translated technical and legal materials from Russian into English. She also edited and verified translations into English by non-English speakers. Working on this project gave Janis a good look at a major feasibility study project and familiarized her with initial work on Sakhalin Island.

During the 1990s, Janis continued working on Russian oil and gas projects in Houston, Texas. Among these were projects for Enron Oil and Gas and Enron Engineering and Construction. Stewart & Stevenson Oil and Gas also called upon her services to assist them in their oilfield equipment sales training of oil workers coming to Houston from Siberia to inspect and be trained on their equipment. From 1994 to 1996, Janis worked on the translation team for Mobil Oil Company, spending the bulk of her time on technical and legal documentation from the Sakhalin projects.

In 2003, Janis joined Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P., a major international law firm with headquarters in Houston, Texas. Since that time, she has been on the international arbitration team, assisting them with Russian language matters.

In order to ensure that Janis’ education was up-to-date, she began work on her Master of Arts Degree in the Russian Studies Program at the University of Texas at Austin. She currently commutes from Houston to Austin three days a week. By the end of 2006, she will have completed 24 toward 30 required course hours. All that remains to be completed then will be thesis research and thesis writing. Janis wants the thesis to be relevant to the needs of oil and gas clients working in former Soviet Republics. She is focusing her studies and work on regulatory issues faced by Western oil and gas companies and the service companies who support their work in former Soviet Republics.
